Title: Investigating Fires at Federal Correctional Institutions in Canada
Presenter: Sheldon Barker, CD, CCFI-C, Regional Fire Safety Officer
Join Sheldon Barker, CD, CCFI-C on a journey through fire investigations in a federal correctional institution and looking at three examples/case studies. You will see the creative approaches that inmates will go to set a fire, and the corresponding creative efforts in investigating such fires.
Sheldon has been a member of the federal public service since 1991 when he embarked on what was an honorable career with the Canadian Armed Forces. In 2011 he settled in the nation's capital and worked for the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and later that year switched to the Public Safety Canada domain. After spending five years in Ottawa, his family decided to relocate to the lower mainland of British Columbia where he was a sessional fire service instructor at the Justice Institute and later assumed his current role as Regional Fire Safety Officer with the Correctional Services of Canada.
Sheldon is an active member of the International Fire Chiefs Association, Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs where he is a Steering Committee member in Mental Health, HUSAR, Dangerous Goods, and Drone Technology. He is also an active member of the BC Fire Chief's Association, BC Fire Prevention Officers, and the International Association of Emergency Management. Sheldon is an active member of the Canadian Association of Fire Investigators where he sits as the 1st Vice President and Regional Director for BC.
