Commercial Kitchen Systems: Inspections
and Fire Investigation Seminar / Victoria,
B.C. April 2015
In April 2015 CAFI presented a popular
two-day course in Victoria, B.C. instructed by Phil Ackland of Phil Ackland and
Associates. The course was attended by
insurance professionals, Fire Department investigators and inspectors, City and
airport electrical inspectors, health authorities, independent investigators
and fire protection safety personnel.
All registrants received a digital download of Phil Ackland’s Commercial Kitchen Fire Manual.
On the first day participants learned to
identify and evaluate cooking equipment and the by-products they create, fire
suppression extinguishers and systems, common fire hazards, how to inspect and
investigate fires in commercial kitchens, relevant installation and Fire Codes,
exhaust cleaning requirements and non-compliant fire hazard issues. On the second day participants inspected actual
kitchen exhaust systems in local restaurants and a food court in downtown
Victoria followed by a classroom discussion to review and critique inspection

included: Well structured seminar. Plenty of information given, but in a well

A special thank you to the Victoria Fire
Department for hosting the seminar at their headquarters and arranging the site
inspection of kitchen exhaust systems at various locations in Victoria.

Meet the Instructors:
Wayne Chapdelaine has over 20 years as a fire & explosion investigator and is now the president of Metro Rural Fire Forensics, which serves eastern Canada. Chapdelaine is involved with numerous fire investigation committees and serves as a director for the National Association of Fire Investigators.
Mark Gruchy is an associate with Gittens & Associates, a Newfoundland based law firm. Gruchy heads the firm's criminal law practice group and has extensive knowledge of the Canadian criminal code as it pertains to arson.
Greg Gorbett is currently an associate professor at Eastern Kentucky University. Gorbett has been on numerous NFPA and IFSTA validation committees, and has been a presenter nationally at a number of fire-related conferences. He currently serves on the NFPA 921 and 1033 committees, as well as a director for the National Association of Fire Investigators
Richard Meier is a full time fire and explosion expert with the world's oldest fire investigation firm, John A. Kennedy & Associates. Meier has an extensive background in mechanical engineering and manufacturing. He serves as an alternate on NFPA 1033 and treasurer of NAFI.
