“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much”.

  -Helen Keller

The 2015 Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Association of Fire Investigators was held Wednesday, December 9th, 2015.  Some highlights from the last year that were discussed at the AGM include:

National Executive

Following the retirement of Kenneth Munroe as 1st Vice President, and as President of the Winnipeg Chapter, Mr. Val Chlistovsky accepted the nomination and moved from the position of 2nd Vice President to 1st Vice President.

At the AGM, Dan Denomme from Mission, B.C. was nominated to, and accepted, the position of 2nd Vice President.  Congratulations Dan, and welcome to the National Executive!

CAFI Privacy Policy

In accordance with and to comply with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), CAFI  recently established its official Privacy Policy which has now been posted on the CAFI website.

CAFI Website

We’ve made a number of changes to the CAFI website in the last year.  Working with the existing site we have made significant changes including a new, more updated and automated membership renewal system.  You can now renew your membership, register for an upcoming seminar or course, or apply for the CCFI-C designation directly online.

CCFI-C Designation

CAFI recently re-introduced the Canadian Certified Fire Investigator Level C (CCFI-C) designation and I am pleased to share that many CAFI members have already submitted their applications.  Information about requirements and how to apply for the CCFI-C designation, and the on-line application process and forms, are posted on the CAFI website.

The Journal

On behalf of all CAFI members I’d like to thank Jason D’Ornellas and recognize his hard work, dedication and efforts in being the Editor of the Journal for the past 5 years.  It’s this work that a lot of times goes unrecognized, so thank you Jason.  Jason has indicated that he will be stepping down as Editor at the conclusion of the publishing of this issue of the Journal, but that he will be available to assist with the transition to a new Editor.

I’d also like to thank all of the other individuals on the Editorial Committee of the Journal for their contribution.  And a special thank you goes to past-President Kim Ayotte who has advised that he will be stepping down from the Editorial Committee.   Kim, Thank for your many years of support and commitment to CAFI which has been invaluable – we wish you well in your future endeavours.

Matt Roberts of Giffin Koerth has volunteered to be the new Editor of the Journal.  On behalf of the CAFI Executive and members, I would like to thank Matt for volunteering and welcome him to the team!

Committees

There was some good discussion at the AGM about revitalizing and formalizing CAFI committees.  There were some volunteers to chair various committees and it was agreed that a priority in the new year would be establish Committee goals and strategies and re-activate the work of Committees.  If you are interested in joining a committe (Training Committee, Membership Committee, Awards Committee, Journal Editorial Committee, Journal Advertising Committee), please send us an email (cafi@cafi.ca).

Membership renewal notices will be sent out shortly.  Please remember that in order to obtain and maintain the CCFI-C designation you must be a CAFI member in good standing.  Also, to be eligible to be involved either as a Committee members or as a Member of the Board (National and Chapter level), your membership must be up to date for the current year.

With the start of 2016, we are looking forward to setting and achieving new goals in the coming year.  I encourage CAFI members to become involved, and we welcome new members and new ideas to bring more diversity and energy to our organization.  As the quote here says “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much”.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all the best in 2016.
