What is a RSS Feed? How to view RSS?
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines or podcasts. An RSS document, which is called a "feed," "web feed," or "channel," contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with their favorite web sites in an automated manner that's easier than checking them manually.

RSS content can be read using software called an "RSS reader," "feed reader" or an "aggregator." The user subscribes to a feed by entering the feed's link into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription process. The reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new content, downloading any updates that it finds.

The initials "RSS" are used to refer to the following formats:

* Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0)
* RDF Site Summary (RSS 1.0 and RSS 0.90)
* Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91)

RSS formats are specified using XML, a generic specification for the creation of data formats.

Kim Ayotte, National President is pleased to announce that the Canadian Association of Fire Investigators (CAFI) supports Bill 72 and efforts to amend the Ontario Building Code to require mandatory residential fire sprinklers in all new residential homes.

At its Annual General Meeting on October 1, 2009 in Niagara Falls, CAFI members voted unanimously on a resolution to support Bill 72. The Associations has 800 members which includes representatives from Fire and Police Services, Federal, Provincial and Territorial Fire Commissioner's and Fire Marshal’s Offices, Insurance adjusters, Engineers, Lawyers, and individuals actively engaged in the field of Fire Investigation.

"As Fire Investigators, we see the devastating effects of fire on a daily basis. People need to realize that 8 out of 10 fire deaths occur in the home " says Ayotte

In Canada, a fire occurs every 2 seconds, every 21 seconds someone is burned, and each week 8 Canadians are killed and 68 injured by fire.

In Ontario, 21% of fire deaths are children. Over 400 lives could be saved per year in Canada if every house had a sprinkler system.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has indicated the rate of fire-related deaths in manufactured homes is 2 1/2 times the rates of fire-related deaths in on-site constructed homes. The Loss of lives in homes where NFPA 13D residential fire sprinkler system has been installed is zero.

Priority is to complete the facilitators guide December 8, 2002 -- The Training Committee has not announced the date of the next C.C.F.I. Having just completed a seminar in November of this year the December meeting was focused on working on the facilitators guide which will allow the roll-out of the program to the Chapters. The Committee meet this week as per the regular monthly schedule and for now will be focusing their energies on completing the facilitators guide. They had work to do processing the certificates for the graduates in Victoria and there were some additional grandfathering applications to complete as well. With a Level C course just completed in association with the Victoria Island Chapter another in Central Ontario and Northern Ontario just last year that were moderately attended, the Training Committee is reviewing requests for courses in other geographic regions. The plan has always been to provide a facilitators guide that the Chapters can use to host their own courses with local instructors. This continues to be the plan as it will avoid the Training Committee having to parachute instructors into any given area. With the wrap up work left on last years activities, a change of leadership on the committee as well as some new members, the committee will require a couple of months to establish time frames for a future course. Your patience is appreciated.

Our first interactive survey is now available. November 23, 2002 -- We now have interactive survey capability on the site and our first subject is the The Journal. During the recent Annual General Meeting, the suggestion was made to eliminate the paper copy of the Journal for all members or for those members who could receive an electronic copy through the mail. The idea was to reduce printing costs in an age where electronic newsletters are common. Our main sources of income are shown in the graph labelled Journal Associated Income. We have other sources of income, but the main revenue that is tied directly to producing The Journal is the three listed above. The costs of producing our magazine are broken down in the graph labelled Journal Costs. You can see that the Journal consumes 80% of the income listed above. Journal costs represent only 64% of our total expenses and our other income sources are limited to training course revenue, donations, memorabilia sales and insurance premium contributions from Chapters. All of these income categories have their own associated expense categories with the exception of donations. You can understand why the question has been asked concerning whether we need a printed copy of The Journal. There are a few issues to consider. Dan Langlois, our new 1st Vice President, is a member of a number of associations, one of which recently examined this issue for their members. Their membership is 100 times ours & they hired a consultant to help them examine the issue. They learnt 3 basic things. 1. Their advertisers wanted a printed version or they would not advertise 2. A majority of the members liked the idea of an electronic version but they wanted it in addition to…not in place of the printed version. 3. Not all of their members had the capability to accept an electronic version. We share some of these issues. We currently only have email addresses for 85% of our membership. We do not know how our advertisers feel about this but you can see they currently cover 20% of the cost of our magazine. We also know that reducing the size of our printing order will not reduce the unit cost and may in fact increase it as we still have to pay the set-up fee. We have shopped around in the past for lower printing costs and have not been successful. Our current printer has been very helpful in billing us to match our cash flow as well. We did agree that we should investigate the issue for ourselves first and the first step is to ask you the members what you think. Tell us what you think of this idea by completing the survey.

Website Revitalized using Microsoft FrontPage Sept 1, 2002 -- After many years the Canadian Association of Fire Investigators has completely revised its website using Microsoft's FrontPage 2002. C.A.F.I. Website Revitalized using Microsoft FrontPage Sept 1, 2002 -- After many years the Canadian Association of Fire Investigators has completely revised its website using Microsoft's FrontPage 2002. Why is this significant? Two years ago we researched our options for updating the website and the content on a more timely basis. Two major obstacles presented themselves, cost and time. We had estimates for a complete overhaul of between $3000,00 and $5000.00. Redesigning the website involved updating all the content as well. As a volunteer organization, we struggle with finding enough volunteer hours to complete all that we want to do. At the 2002 executive meeting the option of dissolving the website was suggested and was unanimously rejected. Even in its outdated form the website provided a point of contact internationally. We recently discovered that with Microsoft FrontPage and a new web hosting provider who supported this software application, we could manage the website ourselves as easily as using a word processor. We have made the switch and are hoping that this will allow us to keep the content of our site fresh and more interactive. We are still looking for a volunteer to manage the day to day job of editing the content of the site so if you are interested please contact Geoffrey Beechey.
